Ask A Feminist: Is BDSM Inherently Misogynist?

Posted: July 15, 2014 by Isaac Cross in Uncategorized

I am not entirely sure how it happened, but somehow the majority of the people I follow on the Tumblr platform are women who post a lot about gender issues. This has given me the opportunity to hear a lot more about the subject than I had in the past.

Often, however, when I attempt to engage with questions or disagreement, I am attacked for my participation in BDSM and told that my participation in the discussion is not welcome.

I am sensitive to the fact that, as a male, I am not in a position to assert any sort of authority on gender equality. But to be excluded solely for my private sexual preferences or interests is unreasonable and, in my opinion, inconsistent with the tenants of feminism, which generally seeks to empower women to make their own decisions, especially when it comes to their body, including the choice to give that control to someone else if they wish.

But don’t take it from me. Here is a post that articulates it very well.

Q: What is your opinion on BDSM? Obviously people should be free do to whatever they want in the privacy of their bedrooms… but don’t you get suspicious when guys nonchalantly admits to enjoy getting off at the thought of humiliating and/or beating  a woman? Doesn’t it sound like they’re reinforcing negative stereotypes that are already omnipresent in our society, only in this case they can get away with it because it’s – supposedly – a consensual fantasy? Is it just a fantasy, after all? Do fantasies happen in a vacuum? Aren’t there going to be ramifications? Where do they come from in the first place? We can criticize women’s portrayal in mainstream media, but we can’t do the same with BDSM? Why? As for female submissives… isn’t consenting to the re-enactment of abusive and exploitative scenarios a bit self-destructive? Or am I taking away women’s agency by pointing this…

No Monday Mailbag July 14

Because I was working at the conference this weekend. I didn’t have time to write up any responses this week.

However, if you have questions about kink conference, now would be a great time to ask them. I have from fresh stories that I can use for answers.

But your questions in the comments or submit through the “Contact Us” page.

We’ll see you next week right here.

In the mean time, I would like to invite you to take a look at RemedialRopes.com, created by Stefanos and Shay. It is a very straight forward website with a ton of information about rope safety and technique. I highly recommend it.

I love this. It is such a great snapshot of a D/s moment that had absolutely nothing to do with sex (well, not explicitly) or SM. Some of the very best moments in a D/s relationship happen outside fo the bedrooms and the dungeons. It’s these quite moments of love and intimacy and acceptance that really make it shine.

Should XCBDSM just be about BDSM?

Posted: June 23, 2014 by Isaac Cross in Uncategorized

So, we keep a folder of stuff we would like to write about, and tend to have a build up of stuff that isn’t strictly about BDSM, but rather about culture or society at large. These things certainly relate back to our community, but when we brainstorm the structure of what would actually be written, that connection would likely be minimal.

For instance, there is a big thing right now about NYC allowing women to walk around topless in public if they want to.  We think that is an awesome bit of progress for equal rights, and can also see connections to issues of rape culture and the general objectification of women and their bodies. We could write a lot about that.

And if forced, we could make that about BDSM somehow, but it wouldn’t feel natural.

So, since we’re getting a little more traffic than usual, now might be a good time to ask you all:

Should the topics on this website be restricted to things explicitly about BDSM? Would an occasional post about interesting things outside of kink upset anyone?

Here is a quick-click poll, but we would also LOVE to hear what you have to say about that in the comments.

900 unique visitors to the website today. That’s a new record. And it’s only 3:30pm. I wonder if we can break 1,000 by midnight.

We have put up a new handout on how to put together your risk profile and play within your personal boundaries.

You can find the guide in the Educational Offerings > Handouts and Resources section up top or by clicking this link here.

Off Topic: My Everything Hurts Like Awesome

Posted: June 3, 2014 by Isaac Cross in Uncategorized

I attended my first Shotokan (Japanese Martial Arts) class in over ten years today, and I hurt everywhere.

My mind picked right back up like I had never let, but the rest of me is very different than it was in my late teens, and it is clearly going to take a while for my body to catch back up.

I was fortunate to have been able to track down the person who taught my previous teacher, and he lived up to my expectations by not going easy on me for a second. I left exhausted and sore and happier than I have been in a long time.

It remains to be determined whether my old rank will be restored or whether I will have to work my way back up. He says he will decide after my first month is done.

Tomorrow, I hope to pick up a new treadmill that should help with m journey back to fitness. This is also day one without soda or energy drinks o any other caffeine for that matter, which in combination with the workout has left me a little shaky.

The one place where my memory is clearly failing me is Japanese. The instructor runs most of the class in Japanese (He is from Japan) and apparently a decade is long enough for me to forget nearly all of that. I have Rosetta Stone at home and my own collection of martial arts specific terms to study with. Hopefully, that will also come back to me soon, along with my better health.

I may or may not update on my progress here as I go along. But for today, I was feelin too elated and just had to share.
