So, this one friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, has been bugging me about putting this information up for a long time.

My class on “Defining and Refining Your Role as a Submissive” is my most popular one. It is also the subject on which I have devoted the most attention and work. I originally started the practice of categorizing submissive roles a few years back with my partner (and now wife) Rain. We began to analyse the different roles she plays as a submissive and why those different roles are appealing to her. We noticed that a few simple indicators worked to predict which role she would be most comfortable in at any given time and helped us to actually put names to them and refine them to a point where we both have a far better understanding of how to act within the framework of each different persona. Examining Emotions: Gun Play

Recently, there was a massive discussion in one of the forums that I follow regarding gun play. Specifically, the discussion began with a person asserting that gun play should never be taught at public BDSM events because “it can never be safe.” (Check out the comments for an example of this type of person)

Upon further examination, it is clear that we, as a society, have worked so hard to scare people about the dangers of guns that we forget that they CAN be handled safely and that, without bullets, a gun is just a hunk of metal, no more dangerous than a steel pipe.

Recently, blogger Franklin Veaux created a “Map of Non-Monogamy” which has been circulating around the internet and gaining popularity. Personally, I like it. Visual representations of complex concepts are always helpful. But that said, I do have some criticisms, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Finding Leather

Within the Leather/BDSM culture, there is a tradition that dates back to at least 1965. While it took different forms in different parts of the country, there has been some form of documentation found to support the existence of this tradition in almost every major city where a Leather sub-culture existed.

The tradition basically states that, with the exception of boots and belts, you are not permitted to wear leather unless it has been given to you by someone more experienced. The leather is usually given after you have “earned” it through some sort of milestone in your development, such as a particularly challenging scene or the mastery of a particular skill.

Who’s the Master around here?

Those words stuck with me. It was one of the first classes I ever attended on a BDSM topic. The title was “The Servant Master” and it was, and still is, one of the most influential and memorable events of my life.

It is nothing new, but recently my attention has been drawn to the ongoing frustration that many members of the community feel in regards to new (and usually young) individuals who choose to use the word “master” before their name. As I have participated in these discussions, I have done a lot of thinking on the matter and decided to go ahead and write about it.

Limits of Safe Instruction

A few days before posting this, I posted about a new way of doing needles that I had tried out. During the discussion of that (on another site), I was accosted by a group of pro-piercers who felt that it was inappropriate for me to teach less-than-sterile methods of teaching in my classes.
But the thing is, regardless of what may be the “safest” way to do something, do we have to accept that as the “correct” way of doing it? And furthermore, do we need to insist that people use it and prohibit the instruction of any other method?
